ஆண்டு 1948 – ஆண்டு 1959
இன்று மலேசிய திருநாட்டின் முதல் நிலைப் பல்கலைக்கழகமாகத் திகழும் மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழக,1948 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் 1958 ஆம் ஆண்டு வரையில் சிங்கப்பூரில் இயங்கி வந்தது. இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறை அமரர் தமிழவேள் கோ.சாரங்கபாணி அவர்களின் தூண்டுதலின் பயனாக, மலாயா-சிங்கப்பூர் வாழ் தமிழ்ப் பெருமக்களின் நீண்ட கால அன்பு வேண்டுகோளினை நிறைவேற்றும் வகையில், மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் வளாகத்தில் கலைப் புலத்தின் ஓர் அங்கமாக 1956ஆம் ஆண்டில் நிறுவப்பட்டது.அப்போது,மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கல்வி கற்றுவந்த இந்திய வம்சாவளி மாணவர்களுக்கென்று ‘இந்திய கலாச்சார சங்கம்’ என்னும் அமைப்பு இயங்கி வந்தது. ஆயினும், தமிழ் மொழி, தமிழ் இலக்கியம், தமிழர் பண்பாடு ஆகிய பாடங்களை இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறையில் பயின்று வந்த மாணவர்கள், தமிழ்ப் பேரவை என்னும் மாணவர் அமைப்பினை நிறுவும் முயற்சியிலும் மிகுந்த ஆர்வம் காட்டி வந்தனர். 1959 ஆம் ஆண்டில் மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் கோலாலம்பூருக்குப் புலம் பெயர்ந்தபோது சிங்கப்பூரில் இயங்கி வந்த இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறையும் மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் புதிய கலைப்புலத்தின் ஓர் அங்கமாக கோலாலப்பூர் வளாகத்தில் இன்று வரை இயங்கிவரலாயிற்று. அப்போது, மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் பல்வேறு துறைகளில் உயர்கல்வி பயின்றுவந்த மாணவர்களும் தத்தம் துறைகளைச் சார்ந்த மாணவர் சங்கங்களை உருவாக்கினர். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, மலாய் மொழிச் சங்கம், வரலாற்றுச் சங்கம்,பொருளாதாரச் சங்கம் போன்ற மாணவர் இயக்கங்கள் தோற்றம் கண்டன. மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழக ஆளுநர் மன்றமும் மாணவர்களின் ஆர்வத்தை வரவேற்று அந்தப் பல்வேறு சங்கங்களின் அமைப்பு விதிமுறைகளை ஒழுங்குப்படுத்தும் பணியினைச் செய்வதற்கென்று மாணவர் நல ஆணயம் ஒன்றை உருவாக்கி உதவியது. சிங்கப்பூரில் இயங்கிவந்த இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறையின் முதலாவது தலைமுறையைச் சேர்ந்த மாணவர்களாகிய திரு. கு. பதமநாபன், திரு. பாரதாஸ் கோபால், திரு எஸ். சிவலிங்கம், திரு. ச. சிங்காரவேலு, செல்வி. தேவகி இராஜமாணிக்கம் ஆகிய ஐவரும் சிங்கப்பூரில் இளங்கலைப் பட்டம் பெற்ற பின்னர் 1959 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் கோலாலம்பூர் வளாகத்தில் இயங்கி வந்த இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறையில் ‘ஆனர்ஸ்’ பட்டம் பெற வேண்டி, சிறப்புத் தமிழ்க் கல்வி பயின்று வந்த வேளையில், மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் உயர்கல்வி கற்றுவந்த ஏனைய தமிழ் மாணவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து தமிழ்ப் பேரவையை நிறுவும் பணியில் ஈடுப்பட்டனர். தமிழ்ப் பேரவையை அமைப்பதற்குரிய வழிமுறைகளை ஆராய்வதற்கென்று நிறுவப்பட்ட செய்ற்குழுவின் தலைவராக திரு. ச. சிங்காரவேலு பணியாற்றினார். இதன் வாயிலாக 1959 ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ்ப் பேரவை உருவாக்கம் காணும் ஆண்டாக வகைப்படுத்தப்படும் வேளை அதன் முதன் தலைவராக இன்று நிறைநிலைப் பேராசிரியராகத் திகழும் முனைவர் சிங்காரவேலு அவர்கள் மதிக்கப்படுகிறார்.
ஆண்டு 1960 
1960 ஆம் ஆண்டு, இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறையின் இரண்டாம் தலைமுறையைச் சேர்ந்த மாணவர்களுள் ஒருவரான திரு. இராம சுப்பையா தமிழ்ப் பேரவையின் தலைவராகப் பொறுப்பேற்றார். அவருக்குப் பிறகு, இது வரையில் சுமார் அறுபது பேர் தமிழ்ப் பேரவையின் தலைவர்களாகத் தொண்டாற்றியுள்ளனர். மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத் தமிழ்ப் பேரவை நிறுவப்பட்ட காலத்திலிருந்தே மாணவர் நலனையே முக்கிய குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு பல்வேறு வகை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஏற்பாடு செய்து வெற்றிக்கண்டுள்ளது. ஆரம்ப காலத்தில், தமிழ் மொழி, தமிழ் இலக்கியம், தமிழர் பண்பாடு ஆகியவற்றோடு தொடர்புடைய நிகழ்ச்சிகளை இந்திய ஆய்வியல் துறையைச் சேர்ந்த பேராசிரியர்களின் ஆதரவோடும் வழிக்காட்டுதலோடும் ஏற்பாடு செய்துவந்துள்ளது. அவற்றில், இலக்கியப் பேருரைகள், கவியரங்கம், தமிழ்ச் சொற்போர், கருத்தரங்குகள், பண்பாட்டு நிகழ்ச்சிகள் ஆகியவையும் அடங்கும். இம்மலேசிய நாட்டிலேயெ எந்தவொரு பல்கலைக்கழகம் மற்றும் தனியார் கல்லூரிகளில் இயங்கி வரும் இந்திய மாணவர் இயக்கங்கள் செய்திடாத அரும் பெரும் சாதனையைத் தமிழ் ஒளி ஆய்விதழை வெளியிட்டு கல்வியியல் உலகில் சரித்திரம் படைத்துள்ளது. இந்த ஆய்விதழை பல பண்நாட்டுத் தூதரகங்களின் துணையுடன் கொரியா, ஜப்பான், இந்தியா போன்ற உலக நாட்டிற்கும் தமிழ்ப் பேரவை தனது பங்களிப்பாக அனுப்பி வைத்துள்ளது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
மலேசியத் தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர்கள், தமிழ்ப்பள்ளி மாணவர்கள், பல்கலைக்கழக மற்றும் கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள் ஆகியோரிடையே தமிழ் இலக்கியம் மென்மேலும் வளர்ச்சியடையச் செய்யும் நோக்கத்தோடு தமிழ்ச் சிறுகதை எழுதும் போட்டியைக கடந்த 1982 ஆம் ஆண்டுத் தொடங்கி ஆண்டுதோறும் ஏற்பாடு செய்து வருகிறது.நாட்டில் சிறுகதைப் போட்டியினை நடத்தி வரும் தமிழ்ப் பேரவை உலகிலேயே எந்தவொரு இந்திய மாணவர் இயக்கம் செய்திடாத இலக்கியத் திட்டத்தினைச் செம்மையாகச் செய்து 32 ஆண்டுகளாக வெற்றிநடைப்போடுகிறது.மேலும், மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத் தமிழ்ப் பேரவையின் ஆக மூத்த நடவடிக்கைகளுள் ஒன்று மாணவ சமூக நல அணியாகும். 
ஆண்டு 1973 – இன்றுவரை
1973 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் கடந்த 45 ஆண்டுக்காலமாக தமிழ்ப் பேரவையினர் மாணவ சமூக நல அணிஉறுப்பினர்களாக மலேசிய நாட்டிலுள்ள தோட்டங்களுக்குச் சென்று அங்கேயே தங்களின் விடுமுறைக்காலங்களில் தங்கி அவர்களின் மேம்பாட்டிற்கு வழிவகுத்துள்ளனர். கால மாற்றம், பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் தவணை முறையில் மாற்றம் ஆகிய காரணங்களால் சமீபக் காலமாக இத்திட்டம் குறுகிய கால அளவுகளில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வந்தாலும் பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர்கள் மத்தியில் சமூக நலன் சார்ந்த சிந்தனைகளை இத்திட்டத்தின் மூலம் வளர்க்க முடிகின்றது. மலாயாப் பல்கலைக்கழகத் தமிழ்ப் பேரவை சார்பில் பல்வேறு வகை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை அரும்பாடுபட்டு ஏற்பாடு செய்யும் மாணவர்கள் அவற்றின் மூலம் புதிய அனுபவத்தைப் பெறுகின்றனர். இத்தகைய அனுபவமே பல்கலைக்கழக உயர்கல்விச் சார்புடைய அனுபவமாக அமைவதால் இந்த அனுபவம் அவர்களுடைய பிற்கால வாழ்வியலுக்குப் பேர் உதவியாக விளங்கும் என்பது திண்ணம். வாழ்க தமிழ்ப் பேரவை! வளர்க தமிழ்ப் பேரவையின் சீரிய தொண்டு!

The Glorious History of Tamil Language Society of University Malaya (TLSUM)

Year 1948 - Year 1959

Nation’s topmost university, University of Malaya was showering education from 1948 till 1958 in Singapore. As a step of fulfilling Malaysian and Singapore Indians’ wish,Department of Indian Studies was proudly established by ‘Tamizhavel’ G. Sarangabani as one of the division in Arts Faculty in 1956. Dream of many Indians turned out as a bright reality by the relentless effort of G. Sarangabani. By the time University of Malaya spread its wing to capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur in 1959, Department of Indian Studies remained as one of the division under Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya. There was an organization wholly for Indian students of University Malaya by the name ‘Indian Cultural Society’. Yet, students of Indian Studies Department who were passionate in Tamil language began to set up another student-run organization with the name of ‘Tamizh Peravai/ Tamil Language Society of University Malaya (TLSUM)’. Many student-run bodies mushroomed by effort of students from different faculties in University of Malaya such as Malay Language Society, History Society. This was highly welcomed by the Administration of University Malaya and therefore, to ease students’ effort in building organizations ‘Student Affairs Division’ was set up.It came up with specific guidance in forming firm organizations by students. Fresh first batch students of Department of Indian Studies in Singapore, namely MrK. Pathmanabhan, Mr. Bharathas Gopal, Mr. S. Sivalingam, Mr. S. Singaravelu, Miss R. Thevaki continued their education journey in Kuala Lumpur and they had lend their hands to Tamil students in establishing Tamil Language Society of University Malaya. They joined in the beautiful effort of forming ‘Tamizh Peravai’ and there was a special formation led by Mr. S. Singaravelu in analyzing the ways for the set-up of Tamil Language Society of University Malaya

Year 1960

It came up with specific guidance in forming firm organizations by students. Fresh first batch students of Department of Indian Studies in Singapore, namely MrK. Pathmanabhan, Mr. Bharathas Gopal, Mr. S. Sivalingam, Mr. S. Singaravelu, Miss R. Thevaki continued their education journey in Kuala Lumpur and they had lend their hands to Tamil students in establishing Tamil Language Society of University Malaya. They joined in the beautiful effort of forming ‘Tamizh Peravai’ and there was a special formation led by Mr. S. Singaravelu in analyzing the ways for the set-up of Tamil Language Society of University Malaya. To mark his noble effort, he was elected as the first president of Tamil Language Society of University Malaya. He owns special respect among Indian students in University of Malaya till date. Tamil Language Society of University Malaya has been successfully led by 60 great leaders and have been backbone to glorious growth of this organization. Undeniably, their contribution did not stop there, hence, they are playing significance role in various fields in our nation.The prior and noble aim of Tamil Language Society of University Malaya remains unchanged till date which is; to ensure students’ well-being and many plans were designed by conducting various activities and events to achieve the aim.Initially, many events were organized in conjunction with Tamil language and literature, Tamil culture with the guidance of lecturers of Indian Studies Department. Some activities captured many students’ attention which includes Tamil Debate Competition, Cultural Programs and Seminars. One of the most significant tasks done by Tamil Language Society of University Malaya is publishing ‘Tamizh Oli’ annual research journal which includes not only research essays in Tamil, but also in English and Malay since 1959.

Year 1973 - Year 2023

It is an undeniable fact that no any other Indian organization from any other educational institutions perform this highly respected task and not forgetting, ‘Tamizh Oli’ research journal has been sent across the border of nation including Korea, Japan, India. Believe it or not, Department of Indian Studies students are the ones who make up the editorial board of this research journal and their hard work is indeed.To plant the interest towards Tamil literature among Tamil writers and students, Tamil Language Society of University Malaya conducts Tamil Short Story Writing Competition (Peravai Kathaigal) for successful long 32 years since 1982 and this competition still be a part of Tamil Language Society of University Malaya till date. The writers with best stories will receive prize money and the selected stories will be merged and published as a collection of short stories magazine annually. There’s another activity organized by Tamil Language Society of University Malaya which holds older history than Tamil Short Story Writing Competition, namely Students’ Service Corp (SSC) which has been conducted for past 45 years since 1973. Students who volunteer themselves as the members for this activity will sacrifice their semester break to uplift the Indian community in rural and urban areas. They will stay with the Indian community in their respected area for a specific period of time and will involve in many efforts to ensure the community there gain well-being in various fields which includes education, health and social values. ‘Students’ Service Corp’(SSC) is undeniably a prestigious as it raises awareness among students to not forget their roots and also to serve for growth of the community. This activity also bridges students and community regardless distance and time. To sum it up, Tamil Language Society of University Malaya is an organization with highly good motives and students who becomes the members of this organization work hard regardless day and night for the success of activities they join. This will indeed give wide exposure to students and leadership skills will be injected which will serve for their bright future. Hence, Tamil Language Society of University Malaya is an identity of unity among Indian students: By students, For students. May this society remain unbreakable throughout many more years ahead.
